Presentation College Athletics Mission
The mission of the Presentation College Athletic Department is to provide a diverse student body opportunities to participate in athletic programs of distinction while pursuing their education. Athletic programs at Presentation College will uphold Christian values while providing a life-long learning experience that will enhance the student/athlete’s well-being.
Goals
1. Guide student/athletes to be responsible socially, understanding that their athletic talent is a gift to be shared.
2. The athletic programs will serve as a recruitment and retention tool for the academic programs. The recruitment of a diverse population of student/athletes will be done in conjunction with the Office of Admissions and in compliance with regulations set forth by Presentation College and the NCAA. The athletic programs will achieve annual goals for student enrollment, as set forth by the Athletic Director and Vice President for Enrollment.
3. The Athletic Department will comply with all rules and regulations as set forth by the National Collegiate Association (NCAA) and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).
4. Coaches will ensure high academic progress of their respective student/athletes. The graduation rate for student/athletes will equal or exceed the graduation rate for undergraduates.
5. Sports information initiatives, along with public appearances by coaches, will heighten awareness of the Presentation College athletic programs on campus, the Aberdeen community, South Dakota, and throughout the Midwest.
6. Athletic programs will provide positive academic, social, and character building experiences.
7. The athletic programs will be committed to competing at a high level with a focus on UMAC play.
8. Athletic programs will be committed to offering a variety of sports that will meet the interests of the Presentation College student body.
Athletics Philosophy
The Presentation College athletics program is maintained as a vital component of the student body. The admission, academic standing, and academic progress of student-athletes are consistent with the policies and standards adopted by the college for the student body in general. Student-athletes are provided an educational environment conducive to the development of the whole person – intellectually, socially, spiritually, physically, and morally. Student-athletes are provided an opportunity and encouraged to progress toward the degree of their choice and have the opportunity to develop their athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership, and institutional loyalty.
Further it is recognized that a positive, well-run intercollegiate athletic program:
1. Follows the Mission and Philosophy of the college;
2. Is an important part of a well-rounded college dedicated to the service of a broad range of student, faculty, and public interests;
3. Can and should develop character, maturity, and a sense of fair play as well as athletic excellence and physical vigor;
4. Shall be conducted in a manner designed to protect and enhance the physical and educational welfare of student-athletes;
5. Recognizes student-athletes as amateurs where their participation should be motivated primarily by education and by the physical, mental, and social benefits to be derived;
6. Understands that student participation in intercollegiate athletics is an avocation, and student-athletes should be protected from exploitation by professional and commercial enterprises;
7. Is important in engendering community support for the institution at the legislative, state, and local levels;
8. Fosters pride in the college among faculty, students, and citizens of Aberdeen and South Dakota;
9. Promotes fundamental values of respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility
10. Abides by the letter and the spirit of the law requiring nondiscrimination on the basis of sex, race, creed, or national origin.
